It is a common problem, that the dog starts the course with slower speed. There are also dogs who don’t want to leave from the start at all: they just sit there and wait to get more treats! Or they decide to go sniffing when hearing the release cue.
Agility is about speed, so we want our dogs to run full speed right from the start! These four games in the video are great exercises for dogs with motivational issues, but also for dogs who could have better start line behavior.

Great games. I have a question. What do you do when the dog is doing all of these games with enthusiasm and/or runs great in training but you only see the slowness in competition?

Slowness in competition is also a very common problem! It can be caused by many things, for example
– Our state of mind is typically different and in the competitions and dogs react to that change in different ways
– Our handling is typically poorer in competitions, and the dog may find our handling confusing which can affect to motivation
– There is so much going on in the competitions (other dogs, the judge, people watching) that the dog can’t fully relax to run agility
Typically problems that occur only in competitions are a bit harder to resolve. It is a good thing to “train like you compete and compete like you train” :)
